The bill is higher than the estimate I was given.

Before I call anyone, I want to see which provider is over, by how much, and whether any one of them is $400 or more over its own estimate.

Each bill against its own estimate

One row for each provider or facility that gave you a written Good Faith Estimate. Enter the estimate and what they billed.

Example data. The rows marked example are made up to show how the check works. Type over them with your own, or clear them.

  1. ExampleImaging center A

$460 over the estimate. This is $400 or more over its estimate.

  2. ExampleRadiology group

$40 over the estimate. Under the $400 line for this provider.

Total for this visit

Estimates
$930
Billed
$1,430
Difference
$500 over

The $400 counts per provider or facility, not in total. A visit can be more than $400 over in total with no single bill crossing the line, and one bill can cross it on its own.

Imaging center A is $400 or more over its estimate

What you can do next:

  1. Ask that provider for an itemized bill.
  2. Compare each line of the itemized bill to the written Good Faith Estimate.
  3. You may be able to start the federal patient-provider dispute process within 120 calendar days of the date on the bill. Note that date now.
  4. Keep copies of the estimate, the bill, the itemized bill, and notes from every call.

Enter the provider’s written Good Faith Estimate, not a posted price. The $400 counts per provider or facility, not in total. What you type stays in this browser. General information, not legal advice. BoDirect is not a law firm and does not file disputes.
